Maritime Studies

Brief overview of program: The Graduate (MA) Program in Maritime Studies is in its 25th year. The PMS is housed in the Department of History. We have conducted field work around the US, in Canada and Bermuda. Other research has been conducted in Britain, Poland, Slovak Republic. We typically admit 10-15 students per year for the 2.5 year program. We have MOA with National Parak Service, NOAA,and other organizations. Better than 1/6th of our graduates go on to the PhD.

Tuition (2007):In State: $1,992, Out of State: $7,248

Description of Facilities: The PMS has its own building (Eller House) on the ECU campus. We have access to a variety of small water craft and our own remote sensing (Side Scan, Magnetometer, ROV) equipment. Class are held in several locations, with most in Eller House.

Program Faculty: Four Faculty members make up the core group with another faculty line being restored to the program in 07-08. Babits - PhD Brown Richards - PhD Flinders Rodgers - PhD Union Institute Stewart - PhD - Texas A&M Three other faculty are contributing faculty: Dudley - PhD Alabama Palmer - PhD Temple Swanson - PhD Western Ontario

Student Support: Most students are on assistantship for first two years. Other stipends are available. Student assistantships run about $3750/semester.
